The artifacts collected here showcase the connection between academic preparation and professional practice. Each piece was created in a genuine context, intended for a real audience, and carries real significance. They are not merely course assignments repurposed for a portfolio; they represent the actual work itself.

The scholarly work documented on this page reflects the ASU Higher and Postsecondary Education program's commitment to developing scholar-practitioners who can integrate theory and practice, conduct and apply research, and contribute original knowledge to the field. Across the HED curriculum, program learning outcomes emphasize professional identity development, equity-centered leadership, evidence-based practice, and the application of student development theory to institutional contexts. Each artifact on this page addresses one or more of those outcomes directly. The 4R Framework for rural student success demonstrates the capacity to synthesize research evidence and develop original practitioner frameworks grounded in the scholarship on underrepresented student populations. The Thriving, Not Surviving presentation demonstrates how Positive Psychology theory translates into applied professional development programming. The HED 580 Practicum Culminating Paper documents theory-to-practice integration across supervised professional experience. The Compensation Equity Framework demonstrates original policy-level scholarship oriented toward institutional leadership and systemic change. Together, these artifacts do not simply demonstrate competency in individual program areas. They demonstrate the integration of those competencies into a coherent, equity-centered, and publicly engaged professional identity.

This presentation advances the 4R framework, an original practitioner model for institutional responsibility toward rural students. It draws on data from EDAWN, NCHEMS, WICHE, NCES, and the U.S. Census Bureau. It demonstrates the capacity to translate scholarly literature into practitioner-accessible frameworks, to stand before a professional audience as a credible voice on rural student equity, and to ground advocacy in evidence rather than anecdote. It also represents a public claim to expertise on a deeply personal topic.

This document represents an approach to leadership development as a structured, intentional practice. It includes a four-hour session architecture, three distinct small group methods (UNR Mascots & Colors, Wolf Pack Count-Off, Two Truths and a Wolf), and a Leadership Promise closing activity designed as a structured self-authorship moment. The curriculum is grounded in Bandura’s (1977) self-efficacy theory and Baxter Magolda’s self-authorship framework, though both are implicit in the design rather than named, which is what practitioner-scholar integration looks like in live contexts.

It demonstrates fluency in the formal theoretical literature of the HED field and the capacity to move between the abstract framework and the concrete practitioner application.

This paper documents the full arc of the practicum placement in UNR Athletics Student-Athlete Development from onboarding through the mid-semester supervisory transition, the development and cancellation of the men’s wellness group, and the theory-to-practice integration that ran throughout. It demonstrates scholarly writing capacity, theoretical fluency, professional self-reflection, and the willingness to engage honestly with outcomes that did not go as planned.
